Our Dog Kennel Addition Is Complete

To better serve our community and homeless animals, the League has decided to undertake a new building project. We will build a 4,000-square-foot addition to include:
- 10 dog runs that can be divided to house 20 dogs;
- Physical examination room that could be used in future for spay/neuter surgeries;
- Storage space for shelter supplies and one office on the second floor;
- Laundry facilities and a staff locker room.
This new space will allow us to keep dogs that are not available for adoption and newly arrived dogs separate from our dogs for adoption. Only dogs available for adoption will reside in our current dog kennels and, therefore, volunteers and visitors will only have exposure to dogs available for adoption. This will reduce the risk of disease transmission and the stress of overcrowding.
The cost for this privately funded addition is estimated at approximately $1,000,000. The League is fortunate to have a portion of that amount allocated from several generous bequests. While the current economic climate may not seem conducive to undertaking a large building project, it does give us the opportunity to get very competitive bids on all aspects of construction. We will keep you updated on this page about the progress of the addition.
The project began on December 1, 2009, with demolition of three storage sheds that held both kennel supplies and administrative records. We had moved all of these things to either off-site or on-site storage. During construction our staff and volunteers are parking elsewhere to leave our parking lot available for visitors.
The construction was completed in August 2010. We now have space for all kennel and animal control supplies as well as 10 new kennel runs with heated floors, an examination room, and animal food preparation and grooming space.
