Baby-Ready Pets
Every year, thousands of animals are turned into shelters by parents concerned about how their pet may affect the health and safety of their new baby. Any pet can have undesirable, although natural reactions to a new baby. New sounds, smells, and activities surrounding an infant may cause a pet to see the baby as competition, prey, or even a toy.
Baby-Ready Pets offers preparation and assistance to help expectant families prepare their home and their pets for the arrival of the new baby and to make sure that it is a safe and (relatively) stress-free experience for all. This seminar is based on a program created by the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Rhode Island SPCA, and has been endorsed by the ASPCA. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington?s staff will present Baby-Ready Pets for expectant parents in a two-hour workshop at the League.
After the program, participants may call or e-mail follow-up questions if they need additional support. Participants will also receive helpful handouts and a CD of baby sounds to help desensitize their pets to the sounds of the new arrival. This is a HUMAN-ONLY class, please leave your pets at home. Baby-Ready Pets sessions are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, 2650 S. Arlington Mill Drive on the following dates:
Monday August 9, 2010 from 6:30-8:30 PM

"Is his behavior as sweet as his face?"
Adult Manners I
Fun foundation manners for dogs 5 months and older. Curriculum includes : sit, down, stay, coming when called, attention, leave it/take it, and loose leash walking. In addition to teaching you the basic skills, we'll focus on establishing a relationship between you and your dog that is based on benevolent leadership, which helps both you and your dog stay successful even when class is over! Each week we'll also address a problem behavior or area of interest like jumping up or doggie body language. Semi-private class size (no more than 6 dogs) allows for lots of individual attention and personalized instruction! Dogs are required to be current on vaccinations. Seven 1-hour classes (Week 1 is people only--no dogs). Cost $210 ($160 for AWLA adopters).
Begins September 7th at 7:30 pm
Intermediate Manners
Take your beginner basics and kick it up a notch! We'll work on proofing your dog's manners with increased distraction (noise, excitement, movement), practice learned skills with dropped or no leashes, talk about fading food rewards and have fun. Weather permitting, we'll also take it on the road--real world, here we come! Semi-private class size (no more than 6 dogs) allows for lots of individual attention and personalized instruction! Curriculum includes: advanced Stay and Leave It, Wait, Watch Me, hand and object targeting, loose leash walking, coming when called off leash or out of play, and distance commands. Dogs should be proficient in basic obedience skills and current on vaccinations. Owners should have experience with clicker training. Five 1-hour classes. Cost $175 ($125 for AWLA adopters).
Begins September 30th at 8:00 pm
Puppy Primer
This is truly Puppy 101! Geared toward pups 2 to 5 months, we capitalize on this most important stage of your puppy's development by focusing heavily on socialization, confidence building, and developing responsiveness. Lots of off leash play provides opportunities for puppies to learn appropriate dog-dog interaction skills and for you to learn what's okay and what's not when you're pup is romping with a friend. We focus on getting it right from the start--each week we'll learn a new skill and discuss how to curb existing issues like crate training, housebreaking, mouthing and nipping, and jumping up, as well as how to prevent future problems like aggression. Semi-private class size (no more than 6 pups) allows for lots of individual attention and personalized instruction! Puppies should have two sets of vaccinations completed by the first class. Four 45-minute classes, with rolling enrollment--you start as soon as your pup is ready! Cost $75 ($50 for AWLA adopters) or $250 ($200 for AWLA adopters) for Puppy Primer + Adult Manners (you save $35; $285 if purchased separately).
