SUMMARY:Baby-Ready Pets Class
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, thousands of animals are turned into shelters by parents concerned about how their pet may affect the health and safety of their new baby. Any pet can have undesirable\, although natural reactions to a new baby. New sounds\, smells\, and activities surrounding an infant may cause a pet to see the baby as competition\, prey\, or even a toy. \nBaby-Ready Pets offers preparation and assistance to help expectant families prepare their home and their pets for the arrival of the new baby and to make sure that it is a safe and (relatively) stress-free experience for all. This seminar is based on a program created by the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Rhode Island SPCA\, and has been endorsed by the ASPCA. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington?s staff will present Baby-Ready Pets for expectant parents in a two-hour workshop at the League. \nAfter the program\, participants may call or e-mail follow-up questions if they need additional support. Participants will also receive helpful handouts and a CD of baby sounds to help desensitize their pets to the sounds of the new arrival. This is a HUMAN-ONLY class\, please leave your pets at home. \nThere is no fee for the class\, but donations are welcome. Reservations are required and space is limited. To make a reservation or for more information\, please e-mail amintz@awla.org or call (703) 931-9241 x246 with the following information: \nthe number and type of pets that you have in your home (including breed and size);\nyour approximate due date;\nyour phone number and email address;\nthe number of people attending. \nYou will receive an e-mail to confirm that space is available and you are registered.

SUMMARY:Do More 24\, a 24 Hour Day of Giving Has Been Extended
DESCRIPTION:Kima was transferred from an overcrowded shelter that had plans to euthanize her. \nDue to technical issues on the website Do More 24 has been extended until midnight tomorrow night. \nWe transferred this bulldog/plot hound mix from an overcrowded shelter that was going to be forced to euthanize her that very afternoon. When we got her back to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington we discovered that she was in pain. Her ears were infected causing her to shake her head violently and all four of her paws were severely inflamed and irritated from mange. \nOur animal care staff gave her a soothing medicated bath and thoroughly cleaned her ears. They immediately noticed her gentle and friendly nature. Our shelter veterinarian prescribed several medications for her ears and feet. After spending a few weeks in a loving foster home\, Kima came back to the shelter to be spayed and have the ear hematoma treated.  Today\, Kima’s skin is greatly improved and her ears are no longer infected. She is just waiting for that special someone who will recognize her loving personality and take her home forever. Giving Kima a second chance is possible because of her fortitude and will to thrive and because of our animal care team’s unwavering dedication to improving the lives of animals. \nKima will be the campaign animal for AWLA on a special one day of giving on June 6th. Do More 24\, powered by United Way of the National Capital Area\, is a 24-hour online fundraiser for nonprofits like AWLA. We will use the funds to continue doing important work for animals like Kima in our community. \nPlease do three things to help us make Do More 24 a success: \n1.)    Mark June 6th on your calendar and bookmark this giving link Do More 24. Make a tax deductable contribution of any amount. \n2.)    Follow Animal Welfare League of Arlington on Facebook and Twitter. Please use the #domoredog hashtag to keep the conversation going. \n3.)    Spread the word! Forward this email to your family and friends with a personal note explaining why you believe in our work and why they should give on June 6th. \nThanks to donors like you\, AWLA transforms the lives of animals like Kima every single day. Because of your generosity\, animals that would face a grim and painful future are given the second chance they deserve. Help support and enrich the lives of the animals by making a financial contribution on June 6th to Do More 24. Every contribution will help us provide animals like Kima with shelter\, food\, high quality medical care and most importantly—hope for a second chance. Please make your tax deductible contribution on June 6th to help us continue in our mission to improve the lives of animals.
