SUMMARY:Bottle Baby and URI Kitten Class
DESCRIPTION:The National Kitten Coalition\, partnered with AWLA\, will be hosting a combined Bottle Baby and Upper Respiratory Infection class on June 18th from 9:00am -12:00pm. The first half of the workshop will focus on the care of “Bottle Babies\,” kittens too young to eat on their own. When neonatal kittens (less than five weeks old) are brought into shelters\, many are forced to euthanize them due to a lack of resources and/or trained volunteers.  This does not have to be the case.  We at AWLA are committed to giving these fragile souls the best chance possible for survival.  With well-trained staff and volunteer fosters\, these neonatal and underaged kittens can be- and are- saved. \nOur second half of our workshop will focus on Upper Respiratory Infections (URI) in kittens.  While treatable\, upper respiratory infections are highly contagious and can spread quickly among young kittens. Join AWLA and the National Kitten Coalition on June 18th from 9am- 12pm to learn how to recognize the signs of a URI and treat your foster kittens accordingly.\n \nTraining will be located in the Education Room\, held at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington\, 2650 S. Arlington Mill Drive.

SUMMARY:Baby-Ready Pets
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, thousands of animals are turned into shelters by parents concerned about how their pet may affect the health and safety of their new baby. Any pet can have undesirable\, although natural reactions to a new baby. New sounds\, smells\, and activities surrounding an infant may cause a pet to see the baby as competition\, prey\, or even a toy. \nBaby-Ready Pets offers preparation and assistance to help expectant families prepare their home and their pets for the arrival of the new baby and to make sure that it is a safe and (relatively) stress-free experience for all. This seminar is based on a program created by the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Rhode Island SPCA\, and has been endorsed by the ASPCA. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s staff will present Baby-Ready Pets for expectant parents in a two-hour workshop at the League. \nAfter the program\, participants may call or e-mail follow-up questions if they need additional support. Participants will also receive helpful handouts and a CD of baby sounds to help desensitize their pets to the sounds of the new arrival. This is a HUMAN-ONLY class\, please leave your pets at home. Baby-Ready Pets sessions are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington\, 2650 S. Arlington Mill Drive. \nThere is no fee for the class\, but donations are welcome. Reservations are required and space is limited. \nTo see available class dates and register for a class\, please visit our Baby-Ready Pets Registration Page.

SUMMARY:Walk for the Animals
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 7\, 2016\, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington will host the Annual Walk for the Animals at Bluemont Park in Arlington. This event brings together hundreds of local animal lovers and their canine companions for a walk to benefit AWLA shelter animals and support the services and programs that the League provides to the community. \nSince the beginning\, this event has raised life-saving funds that have provided critical medical care\, food\, shelter\, training and adoption services for tens of thousands of League animals.\nYour participation directly supports the League’s mission – to improve the lives of animals – and enriches the lives of all shelter animals as they await adoption and their forever homes.\nYour generosity educates members of our community about responsible pet ownership and supports services like our low-cost spay/neuter voucher program\, monthly rabies and microchip clinics\, and emergency veterinary assistance loans so that our neighbors can provide their pets with long\, healthy and happy lives. \nPlease support the AWLA Walk for the Animals so that together we can reach our fundraising goal of $100\,000 and continue to provide professional and compassionate care for the animals entrusted to us and the people who adopt them. \nAll pre-registered walkers receive a Walk T-shirt and participating dogs get a Walk bandana. \nDemonstrate your devotion to animal welfare with every step you take! SUMMARY:Pet Loss Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Pet Bereavement\nOur pets are important members of the family. They are devoted companions who give us their unconditional love and acceptance. For a pet caregiver\, the loss of a companion animal can be one of life’s most difficult experiences. When we lose a beloved friend\, it often helps by sharing our feelings with others who have also experienced a similar loss. \nFor more than 25 years\, Kathy Reiter has helped pet owners cope with their loss through Pet Loss Support Group meetings at local shelters. \nKathy is recognized as the area’s leading authority on pet loss. Kathy is a psychiatric social worker with a specialty in grief and bereavement. She has appeared on Good Morning America\,CBS News with Dan Rather and PBS. Kathy has also been featured in The Washington Post\, Better Homes and Gardens\, Good Housekeeping and other widely-circulated magazines. \nKathy was instrumental in establishing the hospice movement in the United States and was directly responsible for the construction of the first hospice in Arlington\, VA. While the Arlington hospice was being built\, Kathy’s beloved cat\, Prince\, was diagnosed with a terminal illness. While being experienced in human loss\, Kathy was now faced with impending pet loss of her animal friend. Kathy turned for help\, for resources\, and yet found none. Through her own personal experience\, Kathy came to realize the need for pet loss support\, and generously offers her gentle support to anyone who is grappling with such a loss. \nThe support group will meet quarterly at 7:oopm on the second Wednesday of the month beginning on October 14\, 2015\, in the shelter’s Education Room. There is no charge to attend these meetings\, and all are welcome. No reservations are required. \nPlease enter through the Education Room door\, not the main shelter entrance as we are closed to the public starting at  7:00pm.

SUMMARY:Care of "Bottle Baby" Kittens
DESCRIPTION:The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) has have joined forces with the National Kitten Coalition; a nationally recognized leader in the field of neonatal kitten care\, to prepare\, train and support volunteers interested in fostering these tiny babies. \nWhen neonatal kittens (less than five weeks old) are brought in\, many shelters are forced to euthanize them due to a lack of resources and/or trained volunteers. This does not have to be the case. We at AWLA  are committed to giving these fragile souls the best chance possible for survival.  With well-trained staff and volunteer fosters\, these neonatal and under-aged kittens can be- and are- saved. \nThe mission of the National Kitten Coalition (NKC) is to increase the survival rates of rescue kittens through education and training.  They work with all the industry leaders to provide the most up to date information and advancements on how to care for these babies.  The founders of NKC\, including AWLA’s  2015 Volunteer of the Year\, have decades of hands-on experience helping thousands of the most fragile kittens. \nThe Animal Welfare League of Arlington has run a successful fostering program for 10 years which has saved more than 2\,000 kittens. The need for dedicated and trained foster care providers is constant. By sponsoring these workshops\, the League hopes to increase the number of foster care providers available to all of the animal shelters in the region. \nCome learn how you can help with this life-saving work at a training session at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. Online registration is required. There is no registration fee\, but a donation of $25 would greatly help defray costs.

She has appeared on Good Morning America\, CBS News with Dan Rather and PBS.
