SUMMARY:Walk for the Animals
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 6\, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, AWLA will once again host its annual Walk for the Animals. A perennial favorite\, this event brings together more than 600 local animal lovers and their canine companions for a walk to benefit AWLA shelter animals and support the services and programs that the League provides to the community. \nThis year\, for the first time\, AWLA is hosting the Walk and related festivities at the shelter\, allowing us to showcase the work we do\, where we do it\, and\, most importantly\, the animals in our care. Walkers will have their choice of two routes\, a three-mile walk or a one-mile stroll. Both will begin and end at AWLA. Participants can enjoy tours of the shelter\, meeting adoptable animals\, amusements including a balloon artist\, a face painter\, and a bouncy house\, dog training and trick demonstrations\, a doggy costume contest\, music\, a photo booth\, food trucks\, vendors\, and more!  \nSince its beginning\, more than 20 years ago\, the Walk has raised life-saving funds that have provided critical medical care\, food\, shelter\, training and adoption services for tens of thousands of League animals. The Walk for the Animals is the League’s biggest fundraiser\, and this year’s fundraising goal is $85\,000. \nRegister today! \nOnce registered\, you will be directed to create a personal fundraising page.

Any pet can have undesirable\, although natural reactions to a new baby. New sounds\, smells\, and activities surrounding an infant may cause a pet to see the baby as competition\, prey\, or even a toy. \nBaby-Ready Pets offers preparation and assistance to help expectant families prepare their home and their pets for the arrival of the new baby and to make sure that it is a safe and (relatively) stress-free experience for all. This seminar is based on a program created by the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Rhode Island SPCA\, and has been endorsed by the ASPCA. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s staff will present Baby-Ready Pets for expectant parents in a two-hour workshop at the League. \nAfter the program\, participants may call or e-mail follow-up questions if they need additional support. Participants will also receive helpful handouts and a CD of baby sounds to help desensitize their pets to the sounds of the new arrival. This is a HUMAN-ONLY class\, please leave your pets at home. DESCRIPTION:Our pets are important members of the family. They are devoted companions who give us their unconditional love and acceptance. For a pet caregiver\, the loss of a companion animal can be one of life’s most difficult experiences. When we lose a beloved friend\, it often helps by sharing our feelings with others who have also experienced a similar loss. \nFor more than 25 years\, Kathy Reiter has helped pet owners cope with their loss through Pet Loss Support Group meetings at local shelters. \nKathy is recognized as the area’s leading authority on pet loss. Kathy is a psychiatric social worker with a specialty in grief and bereavement. She has appeared on Good Morning America\,CBS News with Dan Rather and PBS. Kathy has also been featured in The Washington Post\, Better Homes and Gardens\, Good Housekeeping and other widely-circulated magazines. \nKathy was instrumental in establishing the hospice movement in the United States and was directly responsible for the construction of the first hospice in Arlington\, VA. While the Arlington hospice was being built\, Kathy’s beloved cat\, Prince\, was diagnosed with a terminal illness. While being experienced in human loss\, Kathy was now faced with impending pet loss of her animal friend. Kathy turned for help\, for resources\, and yet found none. Through her own personal experience\, Kathy came to realize the need for pet loss support\, and generously offers her gentle support to anyone who is grappling with such a loss. \nThe support group will meet quarterly at 7:00 pm on the second Wednesday of January\, April\, July\, and October at the shelter. There is no charge to attend these meetings\, and all are welcome. No reservations are required.

SUMMARY:Baby-Ready Pets
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, thousands of animals are turned into shelters by parents concerned about how their pet may affect the health and safety of their new baby. Any pet can have undesirable\, although natural reactions to a new baby. New sounds\, smells\, and activities surrounding an infant may cause a pet to see the baby as competition\, prey\, or even a toy. \nBaby-Ready Pets offers preparation and assistance to help expectant families prepare their home and their pets for the arrival of the new baby and to make sure that it is a safe and (relatively) stress-free experience for all. This seminar is based on a program created by the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Rhode Island SPCA\, and has been endorsed by the ASPCA. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s staff will present Baby-Ready Pets for expectant parents in a two-hour workshop at the League. \nAfter the program\, participants may call or e-mail follow-up questions if they need additional support. Participants will also receive helpful handouts and a CD of baby sounds to help desensitize their pets to the sounds of the new arrival. This is a HUMAN-ONLY class\, please leave your pets at home. Baby-Ready Pets sessions are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington\, 2650 S. Arlington Mill Drive. \nThere is no fee for the class\, but donations are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Help us Clear The Shelter!\nThe Animal Welfare League of Arlington will once again join NBC4 to participate in Clear the Shelters\, a nationwide pet adoption event! Thanks to a generous sponsorship from Incentive Technology Group (iTG)\, all adoption fees will be waived on Saturday\, August 19th as part of the the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to find new homes for homeless pets! Last year we adopted out 27 animals in just one day – we hope to beat that number this year! \nWhat to Expect\nClear the Shelters is a fun and exciting day\, but it’s also a busy one! Come prepared to wait before meeting and adopting your new pet\, as lots of people come out to adopt and support AWLA! We can only allow a certain number of adopters into our facility at a time\, so please come prepared to spend some time outside while you wait. \nWhat You Need To Adopt\nMust be 18 years or older to adopt.\nMust have a current\, valid photo I.D.\nIf current address is not listed on your I.D.\, you must bring proof of your current address.\nIf you rent\, please bring rental permission from your landlord or management company. Make sure to read your lease’s pet policy thoroughly – some leases require extra paperwork\, such as a pet addendum.\nWe will not place pets on hold for this event – all pets must be adopted the same day at the time of application. Because of the nature of this event\, we will not be able to accommodate your resident dog meeting adoptable dogs at the shelter. However\, we will discuss how to introduce your resident dog to a new dog in your home and will provide assistance after adoption. \nAll adoption fees are waived\, but please be prepared for the following potential costs:\nMandatory dog licenses for Arlington County residents – $10\nDog collar (all dogs must go home wearing a leash and collar) – price varies\nDog Adoption Kit (includes collar\, leash\, select treats and toys) – $30\nCardboard cat carrier (if you do not have your own carrier) – $5\nCat collar (all cats must go home wearing a collar) – price varies\nCat Adoption kit (includes collar and select treats and toys) – $20\nAny other pet supplies you may wish to purchase! \nAvailable animals can be seen here!
