DESCRIPTION:Our pets are important members of the family. They are devoted companions who give us their unconditional love and acceptance. For a pet caregiver\, the loss of a companion animal can be one of life’s most difficult experiences. When we lose a beloved friend\, it often helps by sharing our feelings with others who have also experienced a similar loss. \nFor more than 25 years\, Kathy Reiter has helped pet owners cope with their loss through Pet Loss Support Group meetings at local shelters. \nKathy is recognized as the area’s leading authority on pet loss. Kathy is a psychiatric social worker with a specialty in grief and bereavement. She has appeared on Good Morning America\,CBS News with Dan Rather and PBS. Kathy has also been featured in The Washington Post\, Better Homes and Gardens\, Good Housekeeping and other widely-circulated magazines. \nKathy was instrumental in establishing the hospice movement in the United States and was directly responsible for the construction of the first hospice in Arlington\, VA. While the Arlington hospice was being built\, Kathy’s beloved cat\, Prince\, was diagnosed with a terminal illness. While being experienced in human loss\, Kathy was now faced with impending pet loss of her animal friend. Kathy turned for help\, for resources\, and yet found none. Through her own personal experience\, Kathy came to realize the need for pet loss support\, and generously offers her gentle support to anyone who is grappling with such a loss. \nThe support group will meet quarterly at 7:00 pm on the second Wednesday of January\, April\, July\, and October at the shelter. There is no charge to attend these meetings\, and all are welcome. No reservations are required.

Any pet can have undesirable\, although natural reactions to a new baby. New sounds\, smells\, and activities surrounding an infant may cause a pet to see the baby as competition\, prey\, or even a toy. \nBaby-Ready Pets offers preparation and assistance to help expectant families prepare their home and their pets for the arrival of the new baby and to make sure that it is a safe and (relatively) stress-free experience for all. This seminar is based on a program created by the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Rhode Island SPCA\, and has been endorsed by the ASPCA. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s staff will present Baby-Ready Pets for expectant parents in a two-hour workshop at the League. \nAfter the program\, participants may call or e-mail follow-up questions if they need additional support. Participants will also receive helpful handouts and a CD of baby sounds to help desensitize their pets to the sounds of the new arrival. This is a HUMAN-ONLY class\, please leave your pets at home. SUMMARY:AWLA 2018 Kid's Club Registration is OPEN!
DESCRIPTION:AWLA’s 2018 Kid’s Club is for children ages 10-13 years old. \nAWLA 2018 Kid’s Club members will meet monthly on scheduled Mondays in 2018 to learn about how AWLA operates\, meet AWLA staff and/or area animal welfare professionals (at select meetings)\, learn about animals in our care and much more. DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 22nd and help us Deck the Kennels with Kongs and Catnip!\nYou’re invited to stop by the shelter anytime between 1pm – 4pm to make fun and delicious enrichment activities for our shelter pets. After you finish your creations\, you can walk through the shelter and take a look at all the adorable adoptable animals your hard work will help over the next few months! We’ll also have a shelter scavenger hunt you can participate in (with prizes!). Attendees will need to bring their own supplies – you can choose from three different enrichment activities to make (or make all three!): \nStuff a Kong for a Dog\nYou will need to bring:\nKong toy (any size\, can be purchased from any pet store or online)\nSmall can of wet dog food (any brand) OR Kong Stuff’n Easy Treat (or Cheese Whiz) \nMake a Puzzle for a Cat\nYou will need to bring:\nToilet paper or paper towel tube(s)\nCat treats or catnip (or both)\nOptional: tissue paper box \nMake a Brown Bag Lunch for a Bunny (or Guinea Pig\, etc)\nYou will need to bring:\nBrown paper bag(s)\nOld newspaper\nCheerios\nOptional: dried banana (no sugar added)\, timothy hay \nBring your items on December 22nd anytime between 1pm and 4pm and we will show you how to make an awesome enrichment toy for a shelter pet! DESCRIPTION:Our pets are important members of the family. They are devoted companions who give us their unconditional love and acceptance. For a pet caregiver\, the loss of a companion animal can be one of life’s most difficult experiences. When we lose a beloved friend\, it often helps by sharing our feelings with others who have also experienced a similar loss. \nFor more than 25 years\, Kathy Reiter has helped pet owners cope with their loss through Pet Loss Support Group meetings at local shelters. \nKathy is recognized as the area’s leading authority on pet loss. Kathy is a psychiatric social worker with a specialty in grief and bereavement. She has appeared on Good Morning America\,CBS News with Dan Rather and PBS. Kathy has also been featured in The Washington Post\, Better Homes and Gardens\, Good Housekeeping and other widely-circulated magazines. \nKathy was instrumental in establishing the hospice movement in the United States and was directly responsible for the construction of the first hospice in Arlington\, VA. While the Arlington hospice was being built\, Kathy’s beloved cat\, Prince\, was diagnosed with a terminal illness. While being experienced in human loss\, Kathy was now faced with impending pet loss of her animal friend. Kathy turned for help\, for resources\, and yet found none. Through her own personal experience\, Kathy came to realize the need for pet loss support\, and generously offers her gentle support to anyone who is grappling with such a loss. \nThe support group will meet quarterly at 7:00 pm on the second Wednesday of January\, April\, July\, and October at the shelter. There is no charge to attend these meetings\, and all are welcome. No reservations are required.

DESCRIPTION:Register now for AWLA’s Movie night for children ages 6-10 year old. Movie night is from 6:30-8:30 PM. Registered participants are invited to attend in PJs and to bring a blanket/pillow for cozy movie viewing. We will be playing an animal movie\, have an animal interaction and serve cheese pizza\, popcorn\, and lemonade to participants. \nRegistration fee is $30 for the first child and $20 for each additional sibling. \nTo see movie title\, please click on registration link below. \nRegistration has closed for the 1/19/18 Movie night- stay tuned to our event page for upcoming movie nights! \nUpon the submission of the registration form\, a link to pay the required fee will appear. SUMMARY:Baby-Ready Pets Class
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, thousands of animals are turned into shelters by parents concerned about how their pet may affect the health and safety of their new baby. Any pet can have undesirable\, although natural reactions to a new baby. New sounds\, smells\, and activities surrounding an infant may cause a pet to see the baby as competition\, prey\, or even a toy. \nBaby-Ready Pets offers preparation and assistance to help expectant families prepare their home and their pets for the arrival of the new baby and to make sure that it is a safe and (relatively) stress-free experience for all. This seminar is based on a program created by the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Rhode Island SPCA\, and has been endorsed by the ASPCA. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s staff will present Baby-Ready Pets for expectant parents in a two-hour workshop at the League. \nAfter the program\, participants may call or e-mail follow-up questions if they need additional support. Participants will also receive helpful handouts and a CD of baby sounds to help desensitize their pets to the sounds of the new arrival. This is a HUMAN-ONLY class\, please leave your pets at home. Baby-Ready Pets sessions are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington\, 2650 S. Arlington Mill Drive. \nThere is no fee for the class\, but donations are welcome.
