SUMMARY:Gutsy Mutts Confidence Building Class
DESCRIPTION:Our Gutsy Mutts class will help you:\n\nCoax your dog out of their shell – at their own pace.\nRead your dog’s body language\, recognize signs of stress and/or fear\, and help them cope with that fear.\nUse simple games to help your dog use their “think brain” rather than their “fight/flight/freeze brain”.\nTeach your dog to calm themselves.\nMake sure your dog gets enough mental stimulation – especially by using their nose!\n\nOver this four week course\, we’ll cover basic concepts like arousal\, thresholds\, trigger stacking\, getting ‘consent’ or letting a dog ‘opt out’ (of meeting people and other dogs)\, the importance of mental stimulation\, the value of structure and predictability\, desensitization and counter-conditioning\, being your dog’s advocate\, and more. We’ll even practice saying no to people who want to pet your dog! \nDogs must be human and dog friendly. If your dog is reactive\, email us at training@awla.org to schedule private sessions. \nJanuary/February Session\nJan 8 – Jan 15 – Jan 22 – Feb 5\n \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Basic Manners Class
DESCRIPTION:Our Basic Manners Class is a four-week series that will cover the basic cues your dog needs to know: “sit”\, “down”\, “stay”\, and more. We use positive reinforcement training methods to foster a stronger relationship with your dog as you learn together as a team. Whether you’ve had your dog for a week or a year\, it’s never too late to work on your foundation skills in a small group setting!\n\n \nDogs are required to be up to date on Bordetella\, Distemper\, and Rabies vaccines to take part in this class. You will be asked to upload your dog’s vaccine records when you register.\n\n \nDogs must be human and dog friendly. If your dog is anxious\, barks\, and/or lunges around people or dogs\, a group class will likely be overwhelming for them. We are still happy to work with you and your dog in a private setting to meet their individual needs and set them up for success.\n\n \nSign Up Now

SUMMARY:Low-Cost Vaccine & Microchip Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Due to a local Winter Weather Advisory and below-freezing temperatures\, this clinic is canceled.  \nOur next clinic is scheduled for February 26th\, and registration will open one week before that date. In the meantime\, you can check out these other low-cost vaccine clinics in our area:\n\nVetco Clinics\nAnimal Welfare League of Alexandria Vaccine Clinics\nFairfax County Animal Shelter Vaccine Clinics\n\n\nGet your pets their vaccines or a microchip at AWLA!  \nAWLA offers rabies vaccines\, distemper vaccines (DAPPv for dogs and HCPCh for cats)\, and microchips for cats and dogs. \nSign-ups for this clinic will open one week before the clinic date. \nThe first two hours (9-11am) are by advanced registration only. The last hour (11am-12pm) is for walk-up clients. We will accommodate as many walk-ups as we can\, but it will be on a first-come\, first-serve basis and we cannot guarantee all animals will be seen. \n\nRabies shots are $10\, distemper shots are $15 microchips are $35.\nFor the safety of our staff\, we strongly recommend that all people attending this event are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.\nNO CASH\, card payment only.\nAll humans must wear a mask at all times and maintain at appropriate distances of at least 6 feet in all situations.\nIf you arrive after your designated time\, you will lose your spot.\nAll dogs must be on a leash\, and all cats in carriers. Retractable leashes are not allowed.\nIf your pet is reactive to humans or other animals\, please do not sign up for this clinic. We ask that you seek advice from a veterinarian.\nThe clinic is indoors in the AWLA Education Room. Waiting is outside\, so please dress appropriately for the weather.\nIf you would like a three-year rabies shot\, you must bring proof of prior rabies shot (vet records or rabies certificates only\, or dog licenses only\, tags do not count).\nDistemper shots are based on the age\, and vaccine history of each pet. If you do not bring proof your pet has received this vaccine before and is not past due\, they will need a booster in 2-4 weeks.\nWe do not offer 3 year distemper shots.\n\nAll paperwork for this clinic will be done at the clinic. \nSign ups will open one week before each clinic. If you click on the button above before that date\, the clinic registration page will read “No Appointments Available”. Please check back one week before the clinic. \n  \nAdditional Information About Rabies Vaccinations\nVirginia law requires that all dogs and cats four months of age and older have a current rabies vaccine. Please bring proof of a prior rabies shot (a rabies certificate\, not a tag) to get a three-year rabies shot. Without it\, your pet will receive a one-year shot. All dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. \nAdditional Information About Microchipping\nGive your pet the protection of a 24PetWatch MiniChip. Each year thousands of lost and abandoned animals are taken in by shelters and humane societies across the country. Some of these animals never make it home because they cannot be identified. Microchipping offers the only truly permanent method of identifying your pet and linking the animal back to you\, the owner. \n*Dates are subject to change at the discretion of AWLA
