Making exposure a POSITIVE ASSOCIATION. Young puppies need to be introduced to as many new sights, sounds, textures, experiences, surfaces, places, people, smells and things as possible. This will help to get them socialized and ready for the big, wide world. Use these bingo squares for ideas on how to provide socialization for your new puppy. Positive exposure (socialization) is an active process during that crucial period from 3-16 weeks of age but should absolutely continue well beyond this age range. Remember, it’s about positive and fun experiences!
Think of this exposure (experiences) as an investment into future behavioral resiliency. You’re opening a behavior savings account and depositing your exposure pennies from the get go. If done well, investing will help you to have a friendly, confident and well behaved dog. Using positive reinforcement methodology during puppy socialization means a liberal use of food treats (or, interactive play, attention and/or petting) (your puppy will tell you what they find reinforcing) to help create those positive associations.

* Use small approximations meaning, to break the item down into smaller, less scary parts. For example, a vacuum cleaner, first exposure is to the device lying on the floor, on its side (not scary tall) without power. Then, if your pup is good and exploring, place it upright. Then move it around without the power. Then take it to another room and turn it on for a couple of seconds. Then turn it on for a half a minute. Then bring it closer and turn it on for a few seconds. And so on until your puppy has been exposed to the potentially scary item one small piece at time without fear along the way.
^ Happy Visit is a visit to a place that your puppy might have to visit but isn’t usually fun. Call your vet and/or groomer to see if they are Fear Free certified and offer “Happy Visits” to help your puppy have good associations with their facility.
