Looking for a meaningful way to give back — and spend time with dogs?
Paws & Walk is AWLA’s public dog walking program, offering community members the opportunity to take select shelter dogs out for short, structured walks.
This program provides enrichment, exercise, and fresh air for our dogs while giving you a chance to support animal welfare in a hands-on way — no long-term volunteer commitment required.
Whether you’re a dog lover, visiting Arlington, or exploring ways to volunteer locally, Paws & Walk is a simple way to make a difference.
Why Dog Walking Matters
Shelter environments can be stressful. Walks provide:
- Mental stimulation
- Physical exercise
- Social interaction
- A break from the kennel environment
Time outside helps reduce stress and improves adoptability by giving dogs positive experiences in the community.
Your 20-minute walk can make a big impact.
How the Paws & Walk Program Works
- Check in at the adoptions desk.
- Staff will identify dogs currently eligible for the program (look for the “Take Me for a Walk” sign).
- We provide all necessary equipment, including leash, harness (fit varies), treats, and waste bags.
- Enjoy a 15–25 minute walk in appropriate surroundings.
- Return to the shelter and check the dog back in with staff.
Walks are limited to approved dogs to ensure safety for the animals, participants, and the public.
We cannot guarantee that a dog will always be available for walking when you visit.
There may be times when eligible dogs have already been walked recently or are resting between outings. If that happens, our team may ask you to return later in the day or visit again another time.
Who Can Participate?
- Participants must be 18 years or older to independently handle a dog.
- Youth under 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.
- Only individuals 18+ may hold the leash.
- No prior volunteer experience is required.
This is a public volunteer opportunity and does not require formal onboarding or background checks.
Safety Guidelines for Public Dog Walkers
To ensure the safety of our dogs and community, participants must:
- Be mindful of runners, bikers, children, buses, and other dogs.
- Do not allow shelter dogs to interact with public dogs.
- Avoid dog parks and off-leash areas.
- Never remove or drop the leash.
- Keep walks to 15–25 minutes unless directed otherwise.
- Limit walks during extreme weather.
- Use positive reinforcement (treats) — no physical corrections.
- Return the dog to the shelter if they appear fearful or overwhelmed.
Our team reserves the right to pause the program during inclement weather or for health-related reasons.
