I meet hundreds of animals every year, but every so often, one will really capture my attention (and heart).
Harriet was one of those animals.
Harriet was rescued during a snowstorm by a shelter in West Virginia. They noticed that her eyes were cloudy and inflamed, and tried their best to treat Harriet. Unfortunately, no-one wanted to adopt Harriet because of the way her eyes looked. So when that shelter asked if we could transfer Harriet into our care, we didn’t hesitate to say “Yes”!
Our vet determined that she had a condition called keratitis, which caused serious inflammation in her eyes. He prescribed her a few different medications, and Harriet’s eyes began to improve. Once Harriet was feeling better we started looking for her new family, but we knew that whoever adopted her might need some help continuing her treatment plan. Thankfully, we have a medical fund called the Jean’s Fund that is for this exact purpose! Through this fund, we were able to reimburse some of the cost of her ophthalmologist appointments in her new home.
We are happy to report that she’s now doing incredibly well in her new home. Her owner told us that “while she is a diva, she is cute enough to get away with it”!
I am proud that every animal at AWLA is given the chance to find a new home, regardless of their needs.
