“If we could adopt a dog right now, THIS would be the one!”
My husband knows that phrase very well. On a monthly (sometimes weekly) basis, I come home from the shelter, extolling the virtues of a new dog (usually an older, rotund dog with a big smile), telling him how perfect they are, and if we were in the right situation to adopt, THIS would be the one! He always laughs and replies, “but you said that about the last one!” And he’s right. I did.
But to me, they are all perfect in their own way, and I do wish I could bring them home with me.
Most recently, a chunky black and white girl named Jambalaya (or Jamby for short) was my “perfect” dog. Rescued from a hoarding case in Louisiana, Jamby was very scared when she arrived at our shelter. The only world she had known in the past few years was a six-foot chain-link kennel, surrounded by other dogs.
Despite being startled by every new noise and not seeming to know what a leash was, Jamby adored being around people! You could often catch her on her bed, flat on her back, all four legs up in the air, wiggling back and forth to reach some invisible itch, and she always had just a little part of her tongue sticking out.
Finding a home for Jamby became my mission, and I did everything I could to get her story out into the world. And finally, after 94 days in the shelter, Jamby went home. One of our amazing volunteers had been following her journey with us and finally decided to dive in and make Jamby a part of their family. I am so happy to report that Jamby is doing extremely well in her new home, soaking up all the love and belly rubs she can.
We were able to give Jamby the time she needed to find a new home, thanks to you.
