Preparing Your Pets For Emergencies And The Future

Anyone who has opened their home and heart to a four-legged friend knows they’re more than just pets. They are beloved family members, wonderful listeners, great cuddlers, and even willing workout buddies. They offer us unconditional love and bring so much joy to our lives. But have you ever thought about how you can return that love by ensuring their well-being, even in the face of emergencies or when you’re no longer there to care for them?

Preparing For Emergencies

When an emergency happens, your pet’s safety should be a top priority. Whether you’re dealing with a natural disaster or personal emergency, creating a “Go Bag” for your pets is an essential part of family emergency planning.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Food and Water: Pack at least a three-day supply of your pet’s favorite food and water.
  2. Medications and Medical Records: Ensure you have a sufficient quantity of any necessary medications and copies of your pet’s medical records, including vaccination history and any allergies or medical conditions.
  3. Identification: Include a current photo of your pet and copies of their identification tags, microchip information, and a recent description of their appearance and behavior. Make sure your pet’s microchip is registered with Petwatch Found Animals. This will ensure that, even if your pet loses its collar or tags, shelters and veterinary hospitals can scan the chip and reunite them with you.
  4. First Aid Kit: Assemble a basic first aid kit for your pet, including bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any specific items recommended by your veterinarian.
  5. Leash, Collar, and Harness: Have a secure leash, collar with an ID tag, and a harness.
  6. Crate or Carrier: If your pet is crate-trained or requires a carrier, have one ready that’s appropriate for their size.
  7. Comfort Items: Pack familiar toys, blankets, and bedding to provide comfort and reduce stress during emergencies.
  8. Sanitation Supplies: Include waste bags, litter, and a litter box for cats.
  9. Contact Information: Write down emergency contact numbers, including your veterinarian’s office and a trusted friend or family member who can care for your pet if you’re unable to.
  10. Emergency Plan: Create a clear plan of action, including evacuation routes and pet-friendly shelters in your area.

The last, but most important, step is to update your Go Bag regularly, especially if your pet’s needs or medications change!

Planning for the Future

Planning for your pet’s future after you’re gone might be a somber topic, but it’s an essential part of responsible pet ownership. Here’s how to ensure your pets are cared for in your absence:

  1. Choose a Guardian: Select a trustworthy friend or family member who is willing and capable of caring for your pet. Discuss your wishes with them to ensure they are prepared.
  2. Include Your Pet in Your Will: Consult with an attorney to include provisions for your pet in your will. Specify the designated guardian and allocate funds for their care, including food, medical expenses, and any other necessities.
  3. Create a Pet Trust: In some jurisdictions, you can establish a pet trust to provide ongoing financial support for your pet’s care. This legal document ensures that your pet’s needs are met even if your designated caregiver encounters financial difficulties.
  4. Update Your Pet’s Microchip Information: Make sure your pet’s microchip information is up-to-date with your designated caregiver’s contact information.
  5. Prepare Detailed Care Instructions: Document your pet’s daily routine, dietary preferences, medical history, and any other relevant information to ease the transition for their new caregiver.

Our pets provide us with unwavering love and companionship. By preparing for emergencies and making thoughtful provisions in your will, you can rest assured that your beloved furry family members will continue to receive the love and care they deserve.

Legacy Giving

Where there’s a will, there’s a way to help homeless animals.

One of the most meaningful ways to support the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) is through a gift in your will or trust. Making a planned gift to AWLA is a great way to honor your love for animals both now, and in the future.

Benefits

  • Your gift costs you nothing now and you retain control of your assets throughout your lifetime.

  • You can change your mind or modify your gift at any time.

  • Your gift may provide tax savings for you or your heirs.

  • Your love of animals will live on in the lives your legacy will save.

Have questions? Please contact Director of Development, Kat Williams, by email at kwilliams@awla.org or by phone at (703) 931-9241 x220.
