The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) has joined forces with the National Kitten Coalition (NKC); a nationally recognized leader in the field of neonatal kitten care, to prepare, train and support volunteers interested in fostering these tiny babies.

When neonatal kittens (less than five weeks old) are brought into shelters, many are forced to euthanize them due to a lack of resources and/or trained volunteers.  This does not have to be the case.  We at AWLA are committed to giving these fragile souls the best chance possible for survival.  With well-trained staff and volunteer fosters, these neonatal and under-aged kittens can be- and are- saved.

The mission of the National Kitten Coalition (NKC) is to increase the survival rates of rescue kittens through education and training. They work with all the industry leaders to provide the most up to date information and advancements on how to care for these babies.  By helping people who care about animals understand what is involved, more may be inspired to become the vital fosters sought by so many animal shelters.  The founders of NKC, including AWLA’s 2015 Volunteer of the Year, have decades of hands-on experience helping thousands of the most fragile kittens.

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington has run a successful fostering program for 10 years which has saved more than 2,000 kittens.  The need for dedicated and trained foster care providers is constant.  By sponsoring these workshops, the League hopes to increase the number of foster care providers available to all of the animal shelters in the region.

The first workshop will focus on the care of “Bottle Babies,” kittens too young to eat on their own.  It will be held Saturday, January 30th, 2016, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, 2650 Arlington Mill Drive, Arlington, VA 22206.

The cost of the workshops is underwritten by the Ross-Roberts Kitten Care Fund, established by Dr. Steven Roberts in honor of his late wife.  Attendance at these workshops is free, however, a small donation to defray costs would be greatly appreciated.  Online registration is required at.
