Gray Squirrels

Gray squirrels live in most areas of the United States, including right here in Arlington County. Squirrels are vital to our local ecosystem, especially for our trees and forests! One squirrel can plant approximately 1,000 acorns each year. Many of these are not eaten and so turn into tree saplings, and hopefully, mature oak trees. Squirrels also are the prey of hawks, owls, foxes, and more, keeping those species healthy in our area.

IMPORTANT: Never feed a squirrel kit unless explicitly directed to do so by AWLA or a licensed wildlife rehabber. They have very specific nutritional and handling needs. It is illegal to raise or keep a wild animal as a pet in Virginia unless you have a State permit. Click here for a list of Virginia wildlife hotlines you can call for assistance outside of AWLA.
