Gray squirrels live in most areas of the United States, including right here in Arlington County! Gray squirrels nest twice a year in late winter and summer, and their babies are born shortly after. Typically, they have 3-4 babies – called “kits” – in each litter. In Arlington, you may likely come across a baby squirrel at some point, and it’s important to know what to do if that occurs.
At around 6 weeks old, squirrel kits will begin to explore away from the nest and its mother. At 8-10 weeks, they are old enough to survive on their own. But how do you know how old a kit is or if it needs help? Following the chart below will help you determine if a squirrel kit needs help, or if it just needs to be left alone:

IMPORTANT: Never feed a squirrel kit unless explicitly directed to do so by AWLA or a licensed wildlife rehabber. They have very specific nutritional and handling needs. It is illegal to raise or keep a wild animal as a pet in Virginia unless you have a State permit. Click here for a list of Virginia wildlife hotlines you can call for assistance outside of AWLA.
