Greetings from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA)!
¡Muchos saludos desde la Liga de Bienestar Animal de Arlington (AWLA)!
On behalf of our team, we are excited to invite you to our first ever AWLA Community newsletter.
My name is Jennifer and if you have attended a clinic here at the shelter or in an Arlington neighborhood, chances are you have seen me! Together with my colleagues Adam, Shaukeria and Ashley on the Community Support team, we are dedicated to helping pets thrive with their people. We understand the joy and love pets give us as we all have pets ourselves.
This newsletter is our opportunity to share upcoming events that are happening at our shelter or in the community, as well as general information on how to keep your pets happy and healthy. We will also include information on how to access our programs and services.
Do you have a story about your pet you would like to share or a positive experience with us? Please email us at communitysupport@awla.org
Heartworm Awareness Month
What are heartworms? Heartworms are spaghetti-like worms that live in the hearts, lungs and associated blood vessels of infected animals.
How does an animal contract heartworms? Mosquitoes transmit this disease if they bite an animal that is infected. They then pass it along to subsequent animals they bite.
Is heartworm disease preventable? YES! Heartworm preventative comes in an oral or topical form, and is given to your pet monthly. Some come in tasty treat-like form! Heartworm treatment is a very expensive and long, trying process. The best thing you can do for your pet is to give them preventative regularly to avoid risk of infection.
